SAN FRANCISCO, CA - As this new design agency’s rate and timeline for growth are unclear, the new office space accommodates uncertainty and provides a system for expansion and reconfiguration. Given a modest budget and a ban on fastening any construction to the existing shell, free-standing furniture (bookcases on casters) and non-invasive finishes (carpeting, super graphics) are used as affordable and repeatable space-defining elements.
Taking basic IKEA kitchen cabinets and arraying them in various configurations (stacking, joining, rotating), the design responds to the studio’s storage needs and also serves to define spaces such as a conference room and a brainstorming den. The cabinet also becomes a basic building block that can be deployed as the office’s needs and staffing requirements evolve.
