SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Hybridizing the cavernous arches of medieval wine cellars with the sun-dappled trellises of Northern California wineries, this wine bar proposal re-invents the classic Italian enoteca in a more casual vein. Constructed of interlocking fiberboard planes - the same technique used in cardboard wine box packaging - a thickened, sculpted wall creates intimate seating areas, permits views and natural light to pass through the glass storefront, separates dining from back-bar and food prep areas, and softens the existing unfinished shell.
The result is an interior that oscillates between introverted and extroverted depending on lighting conditions and one's choice of seat, an environment equally suited to people-watching, hushed conversation, luxurious pampering, and informal bonhomie.
